The November cover of Virtuoso, The Magazine shows a jam jar, Turkish tea, and a pastry stacked in a vertical tower in front of a deep red background.

Good eats.

In Istanbul, a city at the crossroads of Asia and Europe, 2,500 years of cultures and cuisines converge. For the November issue of Virtuoso, The Magazine, we tapped the city’s top chefs for their favorite local dishes and checked into the gorgeous Peninsula Istanbul, which Virtuoso advisors recently voted the best new hotel of 2023. Find those Istanbul restaurants, the full list of Virtuoso award winners, and a few of chef and cookbook author Sohla El-Waylly’s favorite books below.

CHECKING IN
Sohla El-Waylly, wearing a yellow dress and seated in front of light-blue floral wallpaper, smiles at the camera.

Sohla El-Waylly, chef, new mother, and author of the forthcoming cookbook Start Here, shares what she’s been loving lately.

Reading: Cribsheet by Emily Oster and The Fourth Trimester by Kimberly Ann Johnson. Both have been great.

Watching: We just rewatched all 20 seasons of Top Chef, which is my comfort show. I even watched it in the hospital throughout my labor and delivery.

Admiring: I’m a big fan of Christina Tosi. Her first book, Momofuku Milk Bar, doesn’t approach pastry traditionally. She encourages you to riff on the recipe, get loose, and create your own thing. I also think José Andrés is very inspiring. Even before he founded World Central Kitchen, he was open to being creative and having fun in the kitchen. And when you eat his food, you have a lot of fun.

Dreaming of: I’d love to go to Tokyo and Kyoto.

OUTBOUND

We love this idea for creating an audio scrapbook of each vacation. Meet the women fighting climate change in Puerto Rico. If, for some reason, you’ve been searching for a comprehensive index of the world’s snacks, look no further. We could watch Lysée’s pastry chefs at work all day (and we’ve got our eye on their tasting menu, too). FYI: Through January 14, 2024, guests at Amsterdam’s De L’Europe can take a boat ride from the hotel to the Van Gogh Museum for a VIP viewing of the new Van Gogh along the Seine exhibition.
