Remote pursuits.

When polar winters make cruising in the Arctic and Antarctica impossible, purpose-built expedition ships, with their Zodiacs and kayak fleets, head for warmer locales. For the Seabourn Pursuit, that means the South Pacific, with its birds of paradise, teeming reefs, and friendly locals. Writer Jane Wooldridge’s report from New Guinea is below, along with a dispatch from the Capella Sydney, and a visual history of NYC’s LGBTQ+ culture.

CHECKING IN
Thies Sponholz smiles at the camera, wearing a suit with a striped shirt and a crocheted flower in his buttonhole.

Thies Sponholz, general manager of The Fontenay Hamburg, shares what he’s been loving lately.

Packing: Sunglasses, running shoes, and a blue blazer – classic and sporty. And I never travel without a crocheted flower on my lapel from The Chelsea Farmers Club in Berlin.

Watching: When I’m not cycling or jogging, I follow the NBA and NHL. And of course, German soccer matches, though they can be stressful.

Visiting: Immersive art spaces Port des Lumières (open now) and the UBS Digital Art Museum (opening next year) in Hamburg – both are easy to reach from The Fontenay Hamburg. I really like how the boundaries between artwork, viewer, and space are dissolving.

Dreaming of: Lake Como, South Tyrol, Sicily, and San Francisco.

OUTBOUND

A new book celebrates NYC’s queer spaces, and a Zürich exhibition spotlights event producer Susanne Bartsch’s influence on nightlife and culture. These are the world’s happiest cities. Is it time to update your travel organizers? Virtuoso, The Magazine contributor Jeff Koehler’s exploration of Morocco’s influence on Matisse is out now.
