The May/June cover of Virtuoso, The Magazine shows a man with a fishing rod and a Labrador walking along a river in the Scottish Highlands. A cover line reads, “The Adventure Issue.”

Gone fishing.

The cover story of Virtuoso, The Magazine’s May/June adventure issue follows writer J.R. Patterson on his quest for solitude during a fly-fishing trip in northern Scotland. While the Highlands’ wild scenery and tartan-bedecked hotels always deliver, reeling one in is a bit more of a challenge – enjoy the chase in the story below. Plus: The latest books we’re packing, a Tassie hotel we love, and la dolce vita in a bottle.

CHECKING IN
Desiree Reid, wearing black, stands among pink roses on the lawn of Cardrona Distillery and smiles at the camera.

Desiree Reid, founder of New Zealand’s Cardrona Distillery, shares what she’s been loving lately.

Packing: My Montblanc pen and a notebook. I often travel alone, and I love that time for thinking and reflection.

Reading: Me by Elton John.

Watching: I just saw Wicked Little Letters, a British movie starring Olivia Colman. It’s set somewhere very different from my hometown of Wanaka, but it’s all about how there are different personalities that make up communities and look to embrace others.

Reminiscing: My family recently returned from Kerikeri on the North Island. There’s lots to do up there, but this time we just sat and looked at the stars.

Dreaming of: I’m heading to Scotland for business next, but I plan on taking some personal days to stay at Gleneagles, which will be so lovely.
